Jeff Ott first appeared in the punk rock world as the frontman for Crimpshrine, arguably the best punk band to emerge from the 1980s East Bay scene not named Operation Ivy. For the last decade or so, Ott has led Fifteen. Anyone the least bit familiar with Ott should be aware of his leftist politics. "Will Work for Diapers" is a two-disc collection of solo acoustic songs that combines those politics and a punk rock sensibility and comes out sounding nothing like anything Ott has attempted before. The message is in the music, but the people who are attracted to this album will not be listening for the music or the vocals. Still, Ott pulls clever turns of phrase with his lyrics, asking his listeners to think about the world and society they live in. This is not Fifteen light, it is not a spectacular musical display, but those interested in Ott's background and music ought to appreciate it.
