KIIS (Key to Salvation) is a ministry-oriented rap band consisting of Donald Newman (aka D-Smooth) and Kenneth Henderson Jr. (aka KaBac). They both grew up in Christian homes so you aren't going to get a testimony of violence, gang-banging, drugs, etc. here. Their songs are about the pressures of life, seeking to do the right thing, and trying to be a light to the world. The gospel is presented at every opportunity, but the lyrics are well done and the message often applies to us all. The rapping is very smooth and made more interesting by the use of a choir on several of the choruses. "Second Choice" is especially catchy with its hooky chorus,
I don't want to be your second choice
Lift your hands up and rejoice
If you hear this heavenly voice
Cause I don't want to be your second choice
I'm not a great rap fan but I found this album very enjoyable and well done. If you haven't tried rap before, Welcome to the New Era would be a great start as it shows a lot of dance and some techno influences to make you feel right at home.
