Kristy Starling was a second place winner on "Today's Superstar," the NBC competition in the fall of 2002. She came to the attention of Warner Brothers records, but chose to go the recording route in their Christian music division. This CD is her debut album and what a debut it is.
You can tell right away you are listening to a trained voice. It's no wonder Starling has been winning music competitions throughout her high school years. The first selection on this CD, "Water" is the Christian single that is causing a stir in the music business. However, my favorite is "Broken." In "Broken," Kristy lets it all out and the lyrics "...direct me, accept me, hold, put the fragments of this life back together again..." reach out and grab the listener. "Something More" shows clarity of tone and "To Where You Are" displays a controlled vibrato.
"As Long As We're Here" is a softer, ballad song which tells us that "...some people live their lives holding all inside." The plea is to come to the Lord for comfort. This message is also prevalent in "I Need You" and "There Will Come A Day."
Kristy Starling has a full-throated voice that reaches out to people. She knows when to belt out a song and when to hold back for good effect. As a result, with the exception of a percussion level too loud on "Must Have Been Angels," this debut album is a winner.
Somewhere down the road must be a CD of gospel music for Starling. I can't wait.
