Leviticus was one of the Christian heavy metal bands that broke onto the scene in the 1980s. Based in Sweden, they had much greater success in Europe than in North America, although judging by this album, they probably should have had better success here.
From the opening chords to the closing riff, this album is very much a product of its era. There is little question that Leviticus was a very talented rock band. Their style brings to mind much of the metal of the early to middle 80s, and as such, is definitely music of its own era.
The album does not strictly stay within the confines of metal, as there are other rock-type influences on tracks such as "Doubt," and there is the requisite ballad-type song, "All Is Calm."
As a bonus, along with the entire I Shall Conquer album, there are also 3 of the 4 tracks from their 1982 EP Stå och titta på included. On these earlier tracks it is evident which direction the band was developing toward, culminating in I Shall Conquer.
The only problem with the album is that the songs do not show a lot of stylistic variety within the confines of the metal genre that was possible, especially with regards to vocal stylings. That having been said, it's fun to take a trip down memory lane to an age before grunge, an age of big hair and tight leather pants. This album certainly does that.
