Let me start by saying that over time I've been one of Mortification's biggest fans. There was a time when nothing excited me more than the thought of a new Morty album. I hung in there when everyone else was badgering the band about their direction change in Bloodworld. I appreciated EnVision EvAngelene for exactly what it was. I love this band for basically BEING this band.

Their last effort Hammer of God was a let down for me, and I reviewed it as such. I think it's interesting to note that this new album The Silver Cord Is Severed is not on Metal Blade Records like Hammer of God. I think that tells the tale in and of itself. This new direction of Mortification could spawn a new genre. Of course it'd have to be called 'Dull Metal' because lets face it this music is just downright boring.

Trust me when I say there is more to the lack of this album than there is disappointment that Mortification is not what they used to be. Granted in my last review of Hammer of God there may have been some of that, but this CD just does not interest me. I do think this CD is slightly better than their last, but it's still not enough to bring around the excitement of listening to an album. New drummer Adam is good, not great but more than competent, it will be good to see where he goes in the next few years. Lincoln returns on guitars and he's already proven himself as a much better guitarist than he shows on this CD. Steve's bass playing is pretty fair on this CD I heard a couple nice pieces, but his vocals are terrible. He over uses the slower style of singing. Just listen to the chorus of track 3 'Hardware' to get an example of what I mean. The rest of the time he's just plodding through in his new style spoken/shouted voice.

Over all I feel this is at best an extremely average CD that could have used a bit more thought. Give it a listen before you throw down your 16 bucks, and I highly suggest you give the re-release of Break the Curse a listen while you're at it, you'd be better off spending your money there.

HM Magazine #87Reviewed by Bryan RutherfordLike an out-of-control horse these guys have found a way to harness their overwhelming form of metal/thrashcore power, and fit it into what's 'acceptable' in today's society -- using intro melodies that are reminiscent of almost any and every classic rock band featured on VH1's Behind The Music (i.e. Lynard Skynard, The Doors). But before you jot them down as a good cover band for your Uncle…Art for the Ears 2001Reviewed by Marco PovervestWhen I heard the new song Dead Man Walking on the 10 Years Live Not Dead album, I was afraid Mortification was heading for a Hammer Of God part II. The Silver Cord Is Severed is in my CD-player now to prove whether my fear was justified or not. The album also features the drumming of newcomer Adam Zaffarese. I think the first dozen seconds surprised me. It starts with processed sounds, dark but…Dead Zine 2001Reviewed by SORGMortification continue down the evangelical metal road with the latest installment to their ever growing library of music. My count has this as the 15th cd Mortification have released in their 10+ year career. Definitely making them one of the hardest working bands in metal! The Silver Cord Is Severed is one of their best efforts to date. Steve Rowe has made an even more marked return to his…
