Neurosis has been a band for about twenty years now. Twenty years of churning out brutal alt. metal classics, consistently innovative albums and most importantly, twenty years of perfecting their signature sound. The Eye of Every Storm is the work of a mature and established musical outfit two decades in the making, and the age really shows (in a good way).
A few things have changed across the nine-album span of Neurosis' career. The vocals are still a little cheesy, though always fitting, as guitar/vocalist Steve Von Till now trades in an urgent and rasping roar for his lung-shredding screams of the past. The music has also lost much of its metal connotation, sounding more post-hardcore and prog rock than ever. One thing that hasn't changed however, is the Bay Area sextet's ability to pack a punch.
"Burn" starts the album off right with an unpredictable song structure built on pounding drums, passionate guitar shredding and stop/start dynamics. "Left to Wander" is easily the highlight of the album wrapped in tasty overblown distortion and tommy gun percussion. The album closer, "I Can See You", comes in at a close second with a beautiful acoustic intro and a slowly churning climax.
The Eye of Every Storm is an excellent album with relatively few dull moments. A must have for Neurosis fans and a fairly strong argument for becoming one.
