Energetic newcomers Plaid capture a lot of emotion on this debut release on the new label Rustproof Records. Their sound can best be described as modern pop-rock, with a little bit of jazz influence and the occasional horn and organ. The production is excellent. Also noteworthy are the lyrics, everyday stories of life with God that avoid the typical phrases and euphemisms common to evangelism-minded bands. The vocals are quality as well--dynamic, versatile, energetic, and when called for, angst-ridden. Some tracks ("Understanding God") incorporate horns and organ, providing a funky, upbeat 70's kind of twist. Others ("Banter," "Live and Learn") use the standard rock and roll formula well.
With good vocals, a decent sound, and strong song-writing, Plaid only needs a little experience to take off. One complaint, though--for a ten track album, it's over in a hurry.
