After more than 20 years and scads of albums, it must be really hard to be Resurrection Band. Although they really have turned out solid product all these years, it's been a while since they actually surprised anybody. Lament may change all that: Although their experiences as members of the Chicago inner-city ministry Jesus People USA has always infused their music with a natural sense of drama, Resurrection Band has now actually created an actual musical drama. To help them make it special, they've enlisted Ty Tabor of King's X fame to produce it for them. The end result is hard rockin' delight that goes back to their roots as an "industrial strength" classic rock band. Lament will not convince everybody: some will find it too melodramatic; some will be disappointed that Tabor didn't leave a more obvious imprint on the final work. However, for those who have appreciated Rez's passion in the past, Lament stands with the band's finest (in my mind, Innocent Blood and Rainbow's End). And while I also wish Tabor had twisted things up a little more, it's to his credit that he allowed Rez to be Rez. In the end, Lament infuses new life and creativity into the Resurrection Band legacy, while allowing their familiar chemistry and tight musicianship shine to its fullest.
