It seems that there are precious few true death metal CDs coming out lately and of the ones that do they usually seem to lack somewhere. That's why it's good to hear this CDR I got from Soul of the Savior located in south Florida where death metal has a history that is long and deep rooted.
This band makes use of tempo changes like mad, take the first song entitled 'Dear Marilyn', we traverse from slow to mid-paced and at the end pick things up to quite a fast song. The other 2 songs are both pretty well mid to fast paced songs. The guitar work presented here is thick, heavy and well thought out. The only area that I have any issue with is there really are none of the earmark death metal drum pieces. Not much double bass and no blastbeats. Not that this drummer is bad, quite the opposite really he's darn good, keeping the songs held together very nicely. I'd just like to have heard more of what I expected to hear in the way of these drum approaches.
Lyrics are very interesting indeed. I would say the most intriguing would be the title track 'Farewell to the Flesh.' The song talks about being a slave to our flesh, and how it kills us each day. Then as the song shows Christ offering us His grace it ends with the lines:
As you reach out to hold me
I nail down your hand
There is very little cliché in these songs, only a love that is presented as pure and holy. Very well done!
Production on this CD is very good, I was surprised by this honestly, but truth is this is fantastic. The guitars are not muddied out, the mix seems to be dead on right, and every instrument is clearly heard. This is impressive. The CD consists of 4 tracks with one being an intro of less than a minute long. So basically 3 songs, about 11 minutes of music and a look at where death metal should be going in the future. Interested yet? I should hope so. Get in touch with the band to get a copy of this. You'll be glad you did.
