Still Breathing is a new four-piece hardcore band from Oklahoma. The band's debut album "September" is on Solid State Records.
Typically bands like Still Breathing appeal to fans of bands like Zao and Living Sacrifice, but vocally they could also be compared to Underoath. The novelty that sets Still Breathing apart is their female singer, who for the most part will fool the average listener at first.
"September" starts out with screaming from the start, but doesn't get vocally intense until the line in track five "Exhausted" "Your wounds flow with bitter sweetness." Next is "Forsaken," which also turns things up a notch with heavy guitar riffing and double kick drumming. Song seven "Scars For Tomorrow" uses all the instruments to create non-stop in-your-face music. On track eleven "Prevails" picks up the pace as the drummer breaks into cut time for the first time on the record. The next song "Trusted Crown," the last full song on the album, is a never-ceasing wall of sound that starts and ends with a bang.
Besides having a female singer, Still Breathing also has a very tight band that plays well together, which makes "September" a remarkable first record. Yet despite the fact that the band tried to mix things up in the middle of the album with some slow songs, Still Breathing was far more successful with their harder more edgy songs.
