Brothers, the latest release from Take 6, follows the new trend they started with their previous album, Join The Band. On this project there is instrumental accompaniment on every song. The members of Take 6, accomplished instrumentalists in their own right, are joined by guests from Earth, Wind and Fire, and by guest vocalists Brian McKnight and Les Pierce.
The album begins with "Sing A Song," a cover of an old Earth, Wind and Fire hit. The theme of encouragement and support from both God and friends is echoed throughout the album, in songs like "You Don't Have To Be Afraid" and "I'll Be There." They clearly acknowledge the centrality of Christ in the song "Jesus Makes Me Happy." "I Can't Stop Thinkin' About You" is a message from God to us, letting us know that He cares for us all, and probably the best song on the album.
If you're looking for the close 6-part harmony that characterized the early albums of Take 6, you will be disappointed. Instead this features more solo work, with the group backing up. The group has moved away from the jazz chords to a more urban-gospel/soul sound. This is connected to the style of instrumental accompaniment they are using. Nevertheless, the new Take 6 sound is quite enjoyable in its own right and their vocal talents can still be enjoyed by all in this format.
