Severed Will, the first track on this CD, takes off with some real classic style death riffs, before the vocals kick in. Growled and guttural, the vocals are easily heard and understood, however the vocals don't really change at all through this CD. I would have liked to have heard some experimentation with the vocals and had some slower sung parts, or whispered eerie parts, but then not everyone likes all that variety.
The music of Tetelestai is very well described as death metal, but there are various influences from other styles mixed in. There are some speedy thrash parts here and there that really balance the music quite well.
Lyrically Tetelestai has a way of standing out from other Christian bands pretty well. Take the first track Severed Will, this song is best summed up by the chorus lines:
Now in me renew
The joy of knowing you
Sever this sinful case
To newly view your grace
This is a song by Christians and it isn't for Christians or Non-Christians specifically. It's for BOTH at the same time. For the non-Christians will see how fully Christ can change your life, and for the Christians it's a song about renewal, about getting back to where you should be and fully giving up the things you want for the things God wants of you.
Other stand out tracks on this CD are Wholly War, with its blazing speed. Double bass drums pounding through most of the song only go to accompany the guitars' brutality every bit. This song kills. Chained To Darkness is another favorite track, an epic eight and a half minute song that keeps you enthralled from start to finish.
Track seven is titled A Hope So Needed, and is a haunting spoken word type of track, that draws you in with its almost melancholy tone, and spooky drifting guitar strumming. A very interesting ending track to a very enjoyable CD EP. When this band releases a full length album we are in for a real treat.
