The Fighting Jacks draw influences from post punk and indie rock and end up sounding like a poor man's Foo Fighters. "The Dying Art of Life" has that driving, traditional modern rock sound and for the most part the music is catchy. The vocals, however, leave something to be desired. The singer has no difficulty finding the right key, but he sounds like he needs to blow his nose and tends to whine through much of the record. This is an album for those into heavier rock who want a softer edge mixed in.
