The Kry's debut (can you say Bryan Adams does heartland rock?) got the band immediate attention with its clean, yet gritty-vocal approach to pop rock - good songs, great melodies and more than a little bit of energy. This follow-up, You, should help the band continue to win fans with every song played. This is rock and roll and, unfortunately for some Mortification fans, it's a little pretty.

Jean Luc's voice still has that other famous Canadian's trademark sound, and it's darn good. Almost any of these 11 songs would be the perfect ballad for a heavy melodic metal band. There's just enough cool guitar tone to rank these tunes as rock, even if they don't rock.

The most excellent tunes are "Lay Down Your Gods," a bold proclamation with a big, fuzzy bass sound about renouncing idolatry in our modern world; and "I Know Everything About You," a jangly guitar anthem about God knowing our faults and still loving us. These two Canucks and one American do up the old Blind Willie Johnson number, "Jesus is Comin' Soon" real good.

There ain't nuthin' like a good power ballad - and these guys are made out of 'em.

Syndicate Aug 1994Reviewed by Chris WellWith their debut The Kry was written off as a band that wanted to sound like a cross between Halo and Bryan Adams. My, how times have changed. Tracks like "I Can't Stop Thinking About You" and "Everywhere" flirt with jangly, post-Byrd-isms, while tracks like "I Know Everything About You" mix funk and arena rock almost as capably as Extreme. And, yes, their lead singer does sound a bit like Bryan…
