The Wake
Rock And Roll
Reviewed by Doug Van Pelt
Here's some impressive hard rock from Porterville, California. Gina Taylor handles the lead vocals, which fit well with the arrangements recorded here. Mike Taylor does a nice job with the lead guitar riffs, while Eric Claussen adds some nice chops on rhythm guitar. Marty Dodson lays down a competent drum sound, joining bass player Kevin Davis to create a decent rhythm section.
"You've Got To Fight It" showcases Gina's voice rather well. She has a powerful voice that seems to hold back a little bit without sounding safe. There's a little bit of Pat Benatar sass in there, along with some tasteful leads by Mike. It's by far the best song on the tape and worth the price of admission.
"Kick It!" puts Gina's voice upfront, but this song and the other two--"You Shake Me" and "N.S.U."--don't have the hooks nor the composition to thrill my ears.
This wake is sure to make more waves in the future.
