    Formed at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, in 1987, dc Talk began with Christian rap shaped by college performance and a direct evangelical message. The 1989 debut used simple rap-rock, catchy hooks, praise songs, and even a guest beatbox performance. The group changed sharply over the next several releases. Jesus Freak moved toward layered pop-rock, hard guitar, alternative textures, hip-hop, and R&B, while its writing became more personal: "What If I Stumble?" examined failure, and "Colored People" addressed racism through the language of Christian grace. The trio's vocal blend remained central. By Supernatural, released in 1998, rapping had disappeared almost entirely, replaced by dense harmonies, polished production, funk and soul touches, and prominent rock guitars.

    In 2000, dc Talk announced a hiatus while its members prepared solo projects. Intermission gathered material from the group's career with two new songs, while the 2001 EP Solo paired a live group performance with samples from each member's forthcoming work. Toby McKeehan pursued a solo career as TobyMac. Michael Tait formed the band Tait before becoming the lead singer of Newsboys in 2009. Kevin Max continued independently and briefly led Audio Adrenaline during the early 2010s. The trio reunited for performances on the Jesus Freak Cruise in 2017 and again in 2019, but no further dc Talk studio album followed.
