This is one unique and indefinable musical sound! With a horn section to accompany the heavy groovin' guitar-based sound, I'll let other listeners try to place a label on these guys. The most interesting element of Black Happy's musical effort is the diversity of musical eras represented here--early and late 70's funky and mellow sounds as well as the 80's rock sound. Looking at the titles of the songs gives you a peak into what you are about to experience. "Garlic" is a sneaky little go-go sounding song with vocals that sound like Bobcat Goldwaith. With lyrics like "Kinda makes my feet stink," it's obvious that "Garlic" is meant to be a fun song. "Washcloth" is a more serious and heavy sounding song with lots of variety, yet the "Our Father..." break becomes annoying after about two repetitions. "Such Much Suck" has an overall mood reminiscent of the early 70's with a mellow and melodic chorus (there's even a hint of the Hawaii Five-O theme song for just a second). "The New One" is probably their best song. It's a creamy sort of summer song whose sax part could have been mixed better--and it sounds nothing like any other song on the tape. Even though the horn production on this tape could be smoother, these guys offer funky songs (in both the old and new sense) full of different musical styles.
