Hailing from Ohio, it's no surprise Broomtree has some things in common with neighbors Morella's Forest and Belly. Sometimes described as "hard and happy chick music" (as you'll hear for yourself on the record), the straight-ahead guitar rock and little-girl-lost vocals of Kylie Schlig charge through simple songs of faith and devotion. The main songwriter, as well as guitarist and vocalist, Schlig writes many of her songs either as a call to salvation or for the Christian to recommit his or her life. It's an electric presentation, one simple--and rockin'--enough to be an effective tract for many hanging on the fringes of the church. As Schlig matures as a songwriter, it will be interesting to see where she goes from here. Meanwhile, Broomtree holds enough power chords and feedback to make its point.
