We Cast Out the Devil
Reviewed by John Wilson
Covering new ground in CCM is Christian Image, a psychedelic mass of energy from Amsterdam, Holland (a.k.a. Sin City), who hold nothing back when creating their unique sound. The tape begins with an intriguing swell of strange noise (a definite plus in itself), then swiftly moves on to its core, a complex range of rhythms bordering on Industrial - quite an adventurous move...which makes this an instant collector's item (I suppose). Female vocalist style hints at those of Grace Slick, Grace Jones, and Rosanna of Rosanna's Raiders, complimenting a musical entourage predominantly consisting of keyboard effects. Lyrics are thrown in here and there, or in some cases spoken over the music, all in a rather off-handed way, yet not thoughtlessly (characteristic of this style). Due to the prevalence of keyboard overtones, this project may not appeal to the average metalhead - oops, I mean to every distinguished Heaven's Metal reader. Fans (former ones, I hope) of early Bowie, early Berlin, or the Kingdom's scaterd-few will delve passionately into this work of neurosis. Ya gotta love it.
