Do you ever get that heavy, heavy sigh when you walk through the door of your favorite Gospel record store (or shall I say bookstore?), shake your head at that wall of tapes, wondering which one could possibly fill that need for soul motivating, great music? Are you one of those who scoff at album reviews and the reviewer's opinionated half-truths, and somewhat misleading representations? Do you ever wonder why it's so difficult to find gut wrenching, heart on the sleeve rock bands that are dedicated to seeking the Lord -- the common ground between all of us in the body of Christ . . . is anyone at all curious?
Well, these Curious Fools have burst on to the scene with their first full-length recording. Although I personally have only known of them opening for The 77's, this was my first taste of their rich, lush music. This is definitely a guitar band, with a tapestry of keyboard backdrops . . . and one quite emotional singer. The songs bleed with passion and energy and catchy bass guitar riffs -- Imagine a big, healthy steak on the plate in front of you -- Mmm good.
Bass player Wade Jaynes (Steve Taylor, Chagall Guevara) and guitarist Jimmy A. (Vector, Charlie Peacock) are added to the Fool's pallet of color. And the colors run thick and deep on this record. The wonderfully, risky highlights include the psychedelic and dreamy "What You Got," "Unbalanced" and the chilling "You Kill Me." The album, as a complete work, has very few holes and is an intense piece of art -- from the packaging to song structure, it's worth your hard-earned dollar.
Some of you out there may find searching for quality Gospel music meeting your personal expectations rather difficult . . . And some of us can let it slip if the band has at least got a believable passion about them . . . Lucky for us, Curious Fools have both passion and integrity to provide us with one incredible debut.
