Magdalene Records, who specialize in pointing out the beauty of older, discarded recording relics, has done its job here -- offering more than expected. Jimmy Brown narrates demos and songs from the first four years of this pioneering band. "Let me tell you this," states Jimmy, "the quality of this tape is horrid..." The intention of this recording, which the band used to sell on cassette to inquiring fans, is simply an up-close and behind-the-scenes peek at the unpolished side of their music, helping offer perspective on their creative process. The narration's perspective is akin to the Director's Commentaries on DVDs -- funny and enlightening. One fascinating treat is an excerpt from a live show, where a heckler got on Jimmy's nerves and he went off on him. Musically, we hear early versions of "No Time," (live) "J.I.G.," "Attack," and "A Space Called You" (rough mixes from the California Metal sessions) fade in and out in all their analog tape glory(!). If you ever wondered what the Christian heavy metal underground was like, this is a perfect example. Sonically, it's way under the quality radar, and that's just the way it was until someone with serious studio time stepped in and made it sound right. Collectors will really enjoy being able to hear this, but no one will be impressed by the recording quality.
