When Braid broke up their fans seemed to be devastated. I have friends that made the drive from Pennsylvania to Chicago just to see their last set of shows. But I think in the back of everyone's mind was that these guys would continue to play music is some form. Well that form has become Hey Mercedes. I don't think Braid fans could ask for anymore, I mean come on...same lead guitarist/vocals, same bassist and the same amazing drummer. When I originally set out to write this review I was going to try not to use Braid comparisons, oh well I already messed that up. Plus I'm sure thats what you all want to hear anyway.
With Hey Mercedes the boys pick up where Braid left off. The songs tend to be a bit more melodic and more structured. Less spastic drumming and crazy guitar action, but overall better or just as good of songs. Bob's vocals sound the same they did in Braid, just as strong and penetrating. Damon's drumming is a bit more tame but still great, Todd keeps the pace going on the bass lines as usual and Mark definitely holds his own on second guitar. With only 4 songs to base an opinion on it makes it a little tough. All I can really say is that if these 4 songs are representative of the direction that this band is heading they should be able to capture just as many fans as Braid has.
