There's nothing extraordinary about Kelly Minter's latest CD, Good Day. But that isn't necessarily a bad thing. This is the sort of CD you listen to on a long drive, and sing along even though you have no idea how you learned the words.
The music is a fun blend of country and pop, and many of the songs are driven by strong guitar. What really keeps the music moving is Kelly's voice--a rich alto with just the right feel for the type of music she sings.
The thing that draws me back to the CD is the lyrics. The title track, 'Good Day,' is about getting back to the basics and rejoicing in just being alive to watch another sun rise. 'Return to Me' talks about being betrayed by a loved one--and then we find that we are the ones betraying God. The song calls out to those who have turned away, "Make a change, follow hard after the one who called your name."
My favorite song on the CD--the song for all those of us who can't quite get it together--is 'Calling Out.' The beginning of song sounds like the musicians and the singer haven't decided on a tempo yet, and Kelly sings about the struggles of putting the pieces of the puzzle together. And then, at the end of the first verse, my favorite line: "Oh, the folly of my quest when before me you have offered rest."
This CD is not extraordinary, but it's good, and fun and full of little reminders about where our hearts and focus should be.
