Leftover Salmon is a band that defines their genre of music as 'Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass' which means? All you need do is listen to their most recent CD, titled Live and pronounced 'liv', and you will have a grasp on how they came up with this brand of 'have fun' music, which is what you feel like doing when you're listening.
Live is a compilation of live recordings from the Fillmore in Denver and San Francisco, as well as the Salmonfest 2001 "Fester in Lester". The band produced this CD as a tribute to Mark Vann, a founding member of the group, as well as a celebrated banjoist, who died of Cancer in March 2002.
The opening track, 'Let's Go Party', is reminiscent of old timey bluegrass and puts the listener into the festival atmosphere. 'Steam Powered Aereoplane' is a banjo and piano driven bluegrass tune, as well as 'Danger Man'. Mark Vann's quick banjo talent is heard on various tunes including 'Get Me Out Of This City'. 'Unplug That Telephone' is a mix of Cajun and Bluegrass and is catchy. 'Dark Green Thing' takes the listener down a different road as it fuses contemporary jazz with an Irish jig and showcases a range of talent.
Leftover Salmon has a cult following and for a good reason; they are good at what they do and they do it well. The band is currently comprised of five members that hail from different parts of our country, but live in eclectic Boulder, CO. If you want music that places you in a good place Live is the CD you need, which will probably place you in the pool of Leftover Salmon fans nationwide.
