After my recent Zao review attracted a larger-than-usual volume of hate mail, I made the decision to start being a little more fair in my dealings with "extreme music." My first opportunity came with Throwing Myself, Luti-Kriss's debut on Solid State Records. I'm biased against this band for several reasons:
(a) I heard them when they were an indie band, and they were awful.
(b) They purposely misspell their name.
(c) My little sister likes them.
Nevertheless, I was determined to give them a fair shake. Throwing Myself begins with a minute-long wash of white noise. This was not a good sign. Then the second track, "Blacksmith," cuts in, afloat in minor key riffs, thick bass, and crisp production. I'm a sucker for good production, but even the songs are good here - they keep my interest like a hundred thousand screech-core bands can't.
As for the lyrics, as usual, Solid State didn't give me a lyric sheet, but the title of the album and various songs ("Act of My Own," "Last Breath First") leads me to believe that it's going to be typical vaguely pretentious hardcore fare. It doesn't bother me that much, because I can't understand the words anyway.
Hardcore fans are going to love this. Luti-Kriss is going to be the next big thing in "extreme music," and for once, I can appreciate it.
