Sublime recording artists, Ruby Joe, have released their first full length album, Sinking The Eight Ball. Citing influences of Stray Cats, Reverend Horton Heat, and Social Distortion, the band describes their music as rockabilly (and I agree). It has a distinct '50s sound with some thrash thrown in for good measure (e.g. "Tongue Is Numb").
A standout track (and my favorite song) is "Spiritual Heroin." It details how Christ has replaced heroin in the life of the songwriter. Whether this is factual or metaphorical doesn't concern me; I still like the concept. Just as heroin is a powerfully addictive drug, why not have Christ as our addiction? What could be better? "Skin" talks in depth about the issue of pride and prejudice.
I must admit that after a while I started to think that all the songs were sounding the same. At other times, I thought I was at a sock hop. No matter, Sinking The Eight Ball still provides fun music from a new band with a unique sound.
