Sure, mobs of Sometime Sunday fans will run out, grab Drain (hopefully they'll pay for it first), take it home and love it - but I have mixed feelings. It is certainly a solid piece of work, a slice of raw, self-doubting and belligerently apathetic rock 'n' roll in the Pacific Northwest tradition. I just wish there had been a more generous slice of "raw, self-doubting, belligerently apathetic ... [yadda-yadda-yadda]." The actual album is something like 36 minutes, with 20 minutes of extras tacked on at the end. Hardcore fans of Sometime Sunday would pay top dollar for those odds and ends, though: Stacked up in a track called "Ebb," there are bloopers, gags, song parodies, outtakes and tomfoolery galore. And while some of it gets a little tedious (remember, this is one, continuous, 20-minute track), some of it is pretty funny, too (especially the Spinal Tap-ish segment). And I suppose that after 36 minutes of angst at high volumes, maybe it was time they lightened up a bit.
After all, it's only rock 'n' roll.
