Where Mercy Begins, the latest release by Steve Green, was conceived by three producers and offers more variety than Green's more inspirational recordings in the past. Green brings a lighter, pop sound to some contemporary compositions. Holding true to his traditional theme, Green performs songs that are encouraging and uplifting to the believer by proclaiming boldly the Gospel of Jesus Christ.
"Great Is The Lord God," a peppy, praise song opens the project and leads to a more typical Green praise melody, "Kings Shall Bow." This song shows the strength and prominence of Green's voice.
The title cut off the album, "That's Where The Mercy Begins," is a jazzy, soulful rendition with a full chorus of backup vocals. Also intriguing is "God Causes All Things To Grow," a beautiful, tender, love song perfect for a wedding or an anniversary event.
Unique themes are sometimes hard to find in recordings but "Emmaus" on this album has a rare story focus. This song tells of the account where Jesus is walking along side two men. The men do not realize that their companion is Jesus. Soon after, the men find out that this is the risen Lord. The song teaches us of Christ's persistent love for us and how he desires to walk with us forever. Green presents another classic tune called "Revive Us, Oh Lord." The music is more contemporary but the theme to unite Christians to stay steadfast is a standard.
Typical fans of Steve Green may not like this versatility, but he has not lost his proficiency to get the gospel across to the listener. Green has ventured into a new frontier on this album to catch a different audience. As with his other albums, his desire to worship and praise the Lord is clear.
