Texas, known for its strong music communities, yields a polished new rock band for Christ: Houston-based Straightway. With melodic rhythms and superior vocals, their debut release stands out with promise, especially because its casual musical stance contrasted with honest, basic lyrics. Vocalist David Walton's classy style is just begging to be compared with that of Stryper's Michael Sweet, although David sings a bit lower. Harmony vocals highlight most choruses, making them instantly memorable. I was pleased to find a rap song tacked on the tail end of the cassette, highlighting the talents of three bands members, not including the lead vocalist. Entitled "Don't Even Swerve", it was amusing without being silly, albeit short. Of special note is a song called "Wounded Heart", which touches deeply, exemplifying empathy toward neglected children, reassuring them of God's special love. "Black or White" comes across in a sensible, statesmanlike way, assuring accessibility. A glitzy cover shot completes the project, rendering it a savory package. Don't miss it.
