Well what have we here? A band caught in a time warp? Cool...If you like 70's style retro-rock. Now, I'm as much a fan of Velvet Revolver as anyone, but I'm not sure that I'm down with a Tesla reunion album. See, Tesla formed during the 80's, when big hair and metal riffs eventually became prime fodder for such wonderful shows as Behind The Music and I Love 1984. The only problem? Tesla didn't fit in at all. They weren't (and aren't) hair metal. If anything, their sound is more reminiscent of early Aerosmith and other arena rockers, rather than Twisted Sister.
Tesla originally broke up in the mid-90's, after releasing five studio albums. Into the Now is their first record after reforming and fits right into the 70's rock sound, which in their case is perhaps more of a curse than a blessing. Don't get me wrong: it's a decent album, much better than a lot of what comes across my ears. They have the sound and feel of that era nailed, but there's really nothing that catches your ear. No signature riffs or tasty solos. It's like buying Wheat-O's at the grocery store when you could have Honey Nut Cheerios for just a little more. Sure you're saving a buck or two, but is it really worth it?
Check this out only if you're a die-hard Tesla fan. Of course, if that's you, you've already purchased it and you're rocking out to your heart's content. As for the rest of us, let's stick to the classics.
