This CD starts out with one song by Planes Mistaken For Stars called "Staggerswallowswell." It was an OK song. I think I liked most of the stuff off their full length better (which is also on Deep Elm Records). I can never really get into the lead singer's vocals, though. I would describe them as "scruffy-sounding" emo vocals, although that is kind of a generic explanation. I guess in a way it sounds like he has been smoking a lot of cigarettes while depressed. Musically, the song is pretty cool though. Lots of changes and great use of dynamics to get you groovin' in that post-punk/emo kind of way. Race Car Riot contributes three songs. They are cool songs, musically, but I just wish they sang more. I think they only actually sing on one of the three songs. When they do sing they sound great, not that they don't when they are not singing or anything. I guess I just like a band that sings--the music just moves me in a different way when there are words to go along with the music. Their songs are good to just kind of sit back and enjoy, even though they are not mellow or anything. They are just kind of intricate, and are the type of songs you kind of have to sit there and really listen to. Appleseed Cast ends out the CD with two songs. The first kind of rocks out, while the second one is mellow. I really dug the first song. It's hard hitting, and just really rockable. The drums really stand out on this song, I guess because there are a lot of cool changes, almost math rock sounding changes. The guitars really keep the song going as well. I like this band, and I'm anxious to hear their next full length.
