With a name like The Channelsurfers, a smorgasbord of musical styles and pop culture references are to be expected. On their debut, Tunnel Vision, the band fuses punk, reggae and funk, all the while discussing and dissecting disposable modern culture. Highlights include: "Lonely Guy," which rattles off a series of famous "lonely guys," including TV characters, newsmakers and actors whose public personae fit the bill; "C.T.C.," which displays quirky Beck-ish qualities as vocalist Jason Brown yells over a retro-funk track; and the reggae-flavored "So Far Away" and "First Stone." Sharing a sense of humor, and an ability to make original songs that will breathe originality into the cluttered alternative market, the members of The Channelsurfers have made a winner with Tunnel Vision. They should be around a long time.
