To the people who say rock n roll died with John Lennon, listen to The Sights new self-titled album and tell me rock n roll is still dead. I dare you.
The pure rock n roll found on The Sights' third LP showcases great riffs, fun guitar solos, and the uncanny power of melody. Many songs on this album could easily fit on a classic rock radio station along with the likes of The Who, Bob Seger and at times even The Beatles.
The album opens with the organ-driven "I'm Gonna Live the Life I Sing About In My Song," that comes in at just under two minutes--but sets the tone for the entire album as a very classically influenced rock n' roll. The next song, "Circus," contains an amazing guitar lick that makes you want to move and tap your feet with its driving beat that exuberates a real rock n roll attitude. In addition to this, the chorus expresses fun harmonies followed by some great guitar solos.
The production of the album emanates a sound of yesteryear. The guitars and organ are the dynamic force while the bass and drums fit comfortably in the background, with near perfectly mixed vocals.
Although the timeless sound of the album is one of its highlights, there's also the flow of some songs sounding quite a bit like older rock favorites. The song "I Will Be True?" sounds a bit like The Who's "My Generation" for the first fifty seconds, but since when was sounding like The Who a bad thing? Other songs have riffs and parts that I can swear I've heard before, yet it could just be that The Sights are that amazing at making timeless songs.
This may be the best album I've heard so far this year, and I predict it will be on my top ten at year's end. The Sights have a sound that is retro, fresh and classic all at once and make this album enjoyable all throughout.
