Yesterdays Rising is a five piece melodic hardcore/punk band from Murrieta, California and recently released their debut EP When We Speak, We Breathe on Fearless Records. Upon reading their bio I discovered that Yesterdays Rising is a band "that doesn't follow trends but a band that writes with a passion for music as an expression of art." Considering the band has done very little to set itself apart from the rest of the proverbial pack, they might want to reconsider that statement.
The songs are what you can expect: pulsating drums, screaming and melodic vocals over some pretty decent guitar riffs at times. At first listen the band reminded me of Rise Against, just not as good. The more and more I listened to it; I began to see other influences too. There are traces of Glassjaw in tracks like "Our Lucid Dream" while "This Is My Thought Crime" the band slows it down a little and almost has a Deftones feel to it and is one of the strongest tracks on the album. Don Lithgow who is more renowned for bands like Blink 182, Unwritten Law, and Finch did the production.
The band seems to be at their peak when attempting to step outside of their comfort zone with tracks like "This Is My Thought Crime." At other times they sound tired and mundane with tracks like "Sidewalk Remnants" and "Lets Take Slow Steps." The future could look bright if they do choose, like their bio says, to "not follow trends" and stay further away from an already overwhelmed genre.
