    Jetenderpaul was a Kansas quartet formed in the mid-1990s, with Randall Stephens a member from 1996. The group made indie pop from bedroom-scale recordings, using cheap keyboards, layered noise and melodies that stayed recognizable beneath the clutter. The 1997 debut Trying Signals: The Histrionics of Suggestion compressed 26 songs into tracks under four minutes, filling its skewed pop with Casio sounds, handclaps and absurdly elaborate titles. The Woolen Spires retained the homemade warmth while making the songs more accessible, drawing comparisons to the Monkees, the Flaming Lips and Elephant 6 bands. By The Modal Lines in 2000, the short bursts and muddy four-track textures had given way to cleaner production, developed pop structures and vocal lines from Stephens and Jared Miller.

    In 2002, Jetenderpaul issued A Casualty Too Serious To Afford, a six-song 7-inch on Burnt Toast Vinyl and Hype City Records that returned to the band's earlier short-form approach. Stephens later became a historian of religion and popular music.
