If I were to use one word to describe this CD, it would be passion. I looked forward to reviewing Jagged Little Pill solely because of the Motown influence of the hit single "You Oughta Know", obviously a passionate plea of anger / revenge over lost love. Just as passionate is the message of a child trying to earn the love of a vicarious minded parent in "Perfect", [...]. There are other examples I'd like to use but the whole review would be a discussion of passionate lyrics. Musically speaking, my favorite tracks are "You Oughta Know", "Forgiven" & "Head Over Feet". Most of the songs don't have the groove of "You Oughta Know". Instead they sound much more ballad-like, in the style of Carole King meets Natalie Merchant. Except for the use of fake drums on 5 of the 12 tracks, I really like everything else about JLP. Even though there is no warning label for explicit lyrics, some of the songs contain them. With that in mind, I think it's definitely worth a listen.
