It has become evident what David Zaffiro's ears enjoy hearing when he is at work in the studio with a band. Broken Silence's Discerning The Times is no exception. From beginning to end, the melodic strength of Holy Soldier is experienced.
"Streets of the Empty Soul" is a power driven song that has a catchy, ripping guitar lick that rears its nasty head throughout this passionate song. The guitar solo has that signatured Zaffiro feel to it. "Higher" continues with the heaviness of "Streets of the Empty Soul," but it has more of a commercial vibe. The chorus adds some spiritual smoothness that tugs at the soul. "Ready to Go" is a slow, bluesy number with some cool guitar tones during the verses. "Naked" is a dark tune that has an aggression infested groove with plenty of attitude. The song swings in and out of melodic rhythms.
The highlight of the demo is the last cut, "Broken Crowns." It takes the attitude heard in "Naked" and adds some leather and spikes. Out of all the songs on the demo, this one resembles Holy Soldier the least. With its neck breaking rhythms and wailing vocals, "Broken Crowns" puts the finishing touches on this soul-stirring demo.
Broken Silence is not a Holy Soldier wanna be. There are some original ideas heard on the tape. But if you are a big Holy Soldier fan, this demo will satisfy.

Heaven's Metal #30Reviewed by Joey KnightAhh yes, Hawaii! The land of beauty, lush resorts, awesome surfing, and now--great music! This foursome comes through with flying colors!! Great vocal work (lead & backup). Freddy Trixx (bass) and Ace McFadden (drums) keep things water tight while Byron Jacobs (guitar) holds his own very well! What really makes this an outstanding EP is the production and songwriting. Could it be...Yes! David…Similar sounding releases
