Before there was Deitiphobia or the Prodigy, there was Marc Plainguet, making quirky electronic music in his Ohio garage for consumption by the privileged few who managed to stumble on his creations via his indie label Corpqii. With the electronic scene getting a bit more attention these days, Plainguet has picked what seems to be the ideal time to release a best-of compilation, with 17 tracks that span his musical career. In the end, alt.music.marc-plainguet.best-of is a mixed bag. Songs like "Barbie's Lament" and "After lifestyles" survive the test of time due largely to Plainguet's wry sense of humor (the latter envisions the dead rising and participating in everyday activities like going to Disneyland and attending poetry readings). Unfortunately, a bulk of the songs sound dated, and over 60 minutes of music is quite a hefty amount. Plainguet stands poised to be at the forefront of the electronic music revolution, having the experience and the sensibility to pull it off with style. While alt.music.marc-plainguet.best-of is an interesting collectors item, me thinks Plainguet's best is yet to come.
