Here's another fine release in the rockin' worship genre. While some of the other rock worship albums that were released featured solo artists, this one captures a consistent band feel throughout. While not a live album, per se, there is some "worship leading" spoken parts that facilitate a real worship experience for those used to worshipping in a large setting.
While some of the titles may sound like familiar tunes, most of these are relatively new songs. The most recognizable may be "Glory," which declares, "Glory, glory in the highest/ Glory, to the Almighty/ Glory to the Lamb of God/ Glory to the Living Word."
Unlike the aforementioned rock worship releases, this album seems to use standard instruments and have a rock style without trying to or claiming to be "rock worship." The tune "On And On" has a punk rock-a-billy feel to it, with jangly guitars and country vocal twang. "Hail The King" sounds like a cross between early Undercover and The Holidays.
The song "Healing Word," on the other hand, creates a very cool mood that opens the listener to absorb and sing the words out. For sing-along ability, the song "Holy Is The Lamb" is a real good one that offers a funky beat to accompany the verses. "Psalm 9" offers a cool little riff to sing on top of as well.
While these guys know better than to release a cheesy-sounding worship album (which it isn't), it still doesn't rise up to the level of a "put this in as background music, ignore the words, and be swept away with world class music." The Vineyard Church has quite a bit of talent, and this album only hints at what it could do. The one tune where all the talent an musical feel seems to come together is in "Nicene Creed."
