Well, the first thing that stood out to me with this new Get Up Kids full-length is the fact that it definitely sounds different than their first full-length, and for the most part it even sounds a little bit different than the stuff on the "Red Letter Day" EP. Nothing drastic, just change. On the "Red Letter Day" EP, on at least a few of the songs the Get Up Kids seemed to be moving in that Jimmy Eat World modern rock, emo pop kind of way. On this new full-length they seem to have an overall feel of great pop rock. Sure, they pour a lot of emotion into most of their songs, but they still end up coming across as great melodic rock songs. The songs on this CD range from the rocking opening tune, "Holiday," to the more mellow songs such as "Out of Reach" and "I'll Catch You." What the Get Up Kids seem to have mastered on pretty much all of their songs is how to write really catchy tunes. By the second or third listen to this CD I was singing along. The keyboard is present yet again on this CD, which, like on the "Red Letter Day" EP, really adds to the melody of the tunes. This is definitely one of my favorite releases of the year, and if you're into this kind of stuff, I think it will be one of your favorites too. I'm sure some people are going to say or actually have already been saying that the Get Up Kids have sold out. Well, I say they just got better. I have to make sure I check these guys out next time they come to town so I can hear them play some of these new songs live. I would recommend you do the same.
