Scroll down to the end of this review, you're not going to believe it. Yea, that's right, D_Lister reviewing what is known as a punk album, and what's that, a pretty good rating for it as well. To be honest this album has a real crustcore feel to it. Here, let me explain a bit.
It's no secret that the band Spudgun lost their drummer and replaced him with a guy named Jasson Patterson. With this change came about 1,000 other changes for the band as well. First and foremost came a movement away from the standard PUNK ideas. They dropped all the political and sociological crap that punk bands seem to have this unending need to push. With this came a pretty drastic style change as well. It's still punk but when I saw them I was amazed by the severity of the music, and even to the point asked the band what they called their music, to which they aptly replied Metal-Punk.
I can't express enough that I do not like punk. Here let me say it again...I do not like punk. This music is so far removed from punk however that the CD is quite enjoyable. The guitar riffs drone on and are very low ended. The bass is THICK THICK THICK, something I've not heard in a punk band...I do believe ever, but then I've not heard every punk band out there so don't e-mail me a huge list of punk bands with thick bass lines. I have talked to some Spudgun fans and the majority do not like the new direction at all, once again proving the style is not what you expect at all.
Another change that the band is really trying hard to make evident is a change of heart. Once you get past the sheer assault of music and noisy distortion on this CD you're going to find yourself assaulted once again. This time by scripture. The only way these songs could be any more straight forward was if they decided to play and sing the Bible along to the music word for word. Every song has several scriptures to look up for further reading on their topics.
I'm going to just grab random lines from songs as examples:
our Father in heaven weeps for stubborn hearts
without Christ there is no cause worth fighting for
joy in heart doesn't mean peace with God
and on and on and on like that throughout the album.
All in all this album is again NOT for everyone. However you will be doing yourself a huge dis-service by not at least going somewhere and listening to it before you buy it.
7/10

The Lighthouse Unsorted 1999Reviewed by Stacey Lee FeldmanWhen Spudgun became World Against World, more changed than just their name. In fact, World Against World is a whole new ballgame. This band now has decidedly gothic tendencies. One look at the cover of their new album, Until The Day Breaks And The Shadows Flee Away, evidences this transformation. While mainstream gothic and hardcore bands are a dime a dozen, reveling in death, hatred, and the…
HM Magazine #74Reviewed by Brian Vincent McGovernYou can already imagine from the title that these guys may have studied at the Roadside Monument school of naming things -- especially with songs like "Our Nation of Thoughtlessness Celebrates Immorality, While Seeking Independence From, But Nevertheless, Finding a Plague of Sorrow." There's a mouthful. The feeling behind most of the lyrics is a general warning to those who may be blissfully…
The Phantom Tollbooth 1998Reviewed by Josh SpencerOne of the most forgettable bands in recent years was the 80's hardcore/punk band Spudgun, who released an album a year or two ago of crashing noise and frustration with little talent and no ingenuity. Now they're back with a new name--World Against World--and, perhaps due to Chris Colbert's production hand, they've made something a bit more interesting. Until the Day Breaks and the Shadows Flee…
Dead Zine 1998Reviewed by FletchThese guys are awesome live. I don't know them personally but I am good friends with a band they like to play with called Luti-Kriss. That would explain my disappointment with this cd. As a member of Luti-Kriss described the cd to me before I heard it, "I wish they could go back and re-record it...cause they're so much heavier now." I'd believe it if I were you. These guys are really heavy and…Similar sounding releases
