This wonderful split 2-disc treasure features two 5-song EPs, the first from Suffering & The Hideous Thieves (led by Jeff Suffering, formerly of Ninety Pound Wuss and Raft Of Dead Monkeys) and the second from the Hush Hush. The Suffering set shows the band already ten steps beyond their excellent VBM debut. With warm, lush production, spine numbing strings, and stronger but still bleeding vocals, the cathartic, folk-punk minor orchestra gives us a remake of "Disappear" and four new songs of mystical despair and gothic worship. Absolutely fabulous. The Hush Hush brings a similar musical approach, although more stripped down. Amy Carlsen sings like a girl caught up in little girl fantasies, making the eery songs seem duplicitous — both serene and imminently dangerous. One will do (very) well to find and purchase these recordings.
