For good or bad, heavy metal has changed. Bands like Soundgarden, Nirvana and Pearl Jam have changed the rules. It's time to put the spiked collar back on the dog and take that old flannel shirt used to line your dog's bed and wrap it around your waist. Heavy distorted bass guitars have taken over the bottom end, and groovin' riffs accompanied by wah-wah pedals have returned, bringing feeling over technique back to rock and roll.
Okay, what does all this have to do with Wish For Eden? Everything! These grungemeisters are lying face down in the dirt Alice In Chains have kicked up. A quick education of this movement can be had by one listen to "U Could." The wailing feedback, the rak-a-tak-a-tak of the snare drum and "I'm mad at you" vocals are all there.
Tunes like "Green" are immediately likable due to excellent riffs delivered with power and a little texture a la feedback guitar. "Me" is a cool tune with several stops and "bang you over the head" riffs -- which repeats enough to get your body swaying (You see, this kind of music inspires moshing, dancing and stage diving, not the typical headbang of the past). "Blood" is another killer tune with ferocious power and nasty distortion. The breakdown in "Don't Know" is awesome. The groove is carried along, but simmered on low a bit until it has to explode again.
On a (very) casual listen, one may think that these ten tunes all sound the same; but a close listen reveals several mood swings, like the difference between "Questions" and "Ocean" shows; and several different riffs. The musical revolution has arrived and Wish For Eden sounds real, real good.
