Judging by what I've been hearing out of Australia these days, Covenant was a surprise. Out of the land of thrash comes a power metal band with some commercial touches.
Most Mortification fans would cringe if they heard these five songs; but, if you enjoy straight ahead metal, give this one a listen. It starts with "Killing Time," which is about depression and suicide. The production is good, but turn down the bass quite a bit. This one and "Someone Out There" are the heaviest tunes. "Same Tomorrow" is about alcohol abuse, while "Bleeding on the Inside" is about losing a relationship. The title cut is an industrial.
Vocalist Wayne Holden shows good control. His voice never goes flat, even though sings fairly low. I don't understand how drummer Chris Yeend also plays keyboards, but these days anything is possible.
This is a solid effort. The music could be considered somewhat dated; but, if you enjoy it, it doesn't matter. Check it out.
