As I start the review, I have only an advance cassette in front of me that says "Ransom." No lyrics, no pictures, no names of who plays or sings what. But that's cool, cuz when I put the tape in, I didn't need any fact sheet to tell me that I was listening to some excellent music. The sound is powerful and tight, melodious and rockin'. And yes folks, Ransom has a female lead singer and she definitely has talent. With great range, emotion and attitude she belts out the tunes with shades of Patti Smith and Heart coming to mind. Do you remember a guitar player for NightRanger named Jeff Watson? Well, that's who Ransom's guitar leadman sounds like on his solos, a great gliding hammer-on technique that is a pleasure to listen to. In fact, Ransom's powerful hook sensibilities remind one at times of early NightRanger or today's Nelson. But just when you've got the sound pegged, they kick into the double bass speed attack of "Running Into The Darkness." Excellent musicianship all around. Good production, arrangements and mix. And the three ballads are powerful, emotional, smooth and cool. As I listen, I can't help but think of visual images, a la MTV to go along with the fantastic sounds of Ransom. I love this tape and I give it my highest recommendation. I tried to find something wrong with it, but I could not. Let's thank God that Ransom is on our side.
